"There is evidence to suggest that children are highly susceptible to paranormal phenomena. They see what adults cannot. They believe what adults deny. And they are trying to warn us."

Zzzzzzzzzzz...

What? What? Huh? Oh, sorry. Just reading the blurb to The Messengers was enough to send me to sleep. Little was I aware though, that what was to soon unfold was even more boring than the concocted blurb.

Things went from bad to worse roughly nine minutes after I pressed play, as a feeling of deja vu quickly set in. As a feeling of deja vu quickly set in.

[NOTE FROM LOVEY: I know that joke is corny, but I have to do something to amuse myself considering they DVDetails hierachy keep giving me boring films to watch]

It seems that every scary movie made since The Ring features a ghost with long black hair hollow eyes and pale skin. Or could that formula date further back to Evil Dead? Or even The Excorcist??

I could handle the similarities in The Grudge because that film had a compelling story line that accompanied it. But when movies are solely relying on a scary, if annoyingly familiar character to carry them home and forget to apply an intriguing and untold story, it really gets my goat.

[NOTE FROM DVDETAILS HIERACY: It is ill-advised for an employee to bring a goat into the office. Such an animal represents a serious HR violation. Please remove it immediately.]

Adding to my overwheliming sense of disappointment was the simple lack of fright factor, predictable story and vague script.

Here's the movie in a nutshell: A family moves to the country and true to the horror movie formula, take up residency in an old, scary looking house in the middle of nowhere. While none of us need to read the Real Estate blurb to pick it a mile off, they naturally do NOT realise that bad things have gone on in the house and that it's now haunted.

Sounding like yet another remake of The Amityville Horror/ Psycho/ The Shining/ Poltergeist doesn't it!?

Usually a fav of mine is Kristen Stewart (Panic Room) who plays troubled teenager Jess Solomon, but I've got to admit she gave me the shits in this film. And trying to flog Dylan McDermott off as her dad was way too much for me to take. What are they, like 10 years apart in age?

In all honesty, The Messengers gave me a few little jumps but I spent most of the movie mentally bagging the crap out of it.

Props (I've had one too many lunches with The Dude) have to go out to Hong Kong director twins Oxide Pang and Danny Pang, though. Their choice of shots and camera angels are brilliant and worth a look if that's your thing. If it's not, then don't bother with this one.

In a word: deja vu
