The Last Kiss
By: Lovey
Director: Tony Goldwyn Cast: Zach Braff, Jacinda Barrett, Casey Affleck, Rachel Bilson Rating: 3 out of 5
I don’t need to tell the DVDetails audience what a stupidly hopeless romantic I am. I blather on about it quite enough in my oft-biased reviews, which lean heavily toward those flicks that make my heart flutter and allow me to drift off into a world where my perfect Mr Right will sweep me off my feet and make me peanut butter toast and tea every morning.
The Last Kiss is not one of those flicks.
I thought any movie containing ‘kiss’ in the title would surely be a feel-good Lovey-liking cinematic experience, but alas, no. Instead what we get here is 100 minutes of evidence that men are complete and utter scum that do not deserve to share the same air-space as us hardworking, loyal, dedicated, generous females.
Zach Braff plays the main character, Michael, who has a 30-year-old-crisis when his GF (Jacinda Barrett) starts uttering the dreaded ‘C’ word and starts getting serious. Similarly, Michael’s best mate starts to realise – 6 months after his baby was born – that perhaps he is not ready for the fatherhood game, while another mate is set on bedding as many women as he can, with no thought to the next day. You get the picture.
Now, despite the fact that my faith in men went into steep and rapid decline as the movie progressed, I couldn’t help but keep watching the fascinating events that were unfolding before me. Maybe it was the realistic storyline, maybe it was the fact everything was so easy to relate to, heck maybe it was just because halfway through I suddenly worked out who Zach Braff reminded me of – Raymond from Everybody Loves Raymond! The resemblance is uncanny!
But I digress…
Look, it’s a highly watchable movie, leaning toward ‘chick flick’ status, with a great looking cast and an edgy script that will keep you watching and wanting to know how it all ends. But if you’ve recently discovered your BF has done the horizontal tango with another chick, steer clear of The Last Kiss, or it could possibly become YOUR LAST MOVIE.
Extras: Feature audio commentaries by director Tony Goldwyn, and stars Zach Braff, Jacinda Barrett, Michael Weston, Rachel Bilson and Eric Christian Olsen.
Verbatim: Anna: "Life is pretty much in the greys for the most part, and if you insist always on black and white... you are going to be very unhappy."
In a word: Unsettling
