Tenacious D: The Pick Of DestinyDirector: Liam Lynch Although I am quite the hopeless romantic, stuck in a world where I still believe men should open the door for a lady and flowers on a date are a good thing, there’s a side of me that likes to cut loose every now and then and throw off the shackles of my often-dissed romantic side and do some serious belting out of a few old-time classic rock songs in my Ford Festiva. Which is why I let out a most un-ladylike “yeeeahhh!” when told to review Jack Black’s Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny. I got in the mood by playing a worn out mix tape of AC/DC, Meatloaf, Queen and Led Zeppelin. I even dug out my old ‘Open Up and Say Ahh’ t-shirt from a long-forgotten Poison concert. I was ready to rock! Now, I admit this movie is full of holes, brimming with inconsistencies and chock-a-block with brow-furrowing moments. But these negatives are totally offset by a rockin’ soundtrack and some of the funniest (and very spot on) lampooning of rock and roll you will ever see. The movie tells us the back-story of how Jack Black (“JB”) and Kyle Gass (“KG”) meet one fortuitous day and go on to form a duo, Tenacious D. Their quest to become the greatest band in the world leads them on a journey to find the fabled Pick of Destiny. Supposedly used to create some of the greatest guitar riffs in history, the duo believes they need this to succeed. Their plans are thwarted by the original owner of the pick – Beezlebub (check out the cool cameo from one of modern rocks greatest stars) It’s not quite This is Spinal Tap, but Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny is a hugely entertaining and hilarious ride, thanks to the comedic genius of Jack Black and his ability to satirise the lyrics, the clothes, the rock clichés and even the language of rock’s greatest. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but enjoy it for what it is, a laugh-out-loud comedy that will have you practicing air guitar and ‘power slides’ all night! Extras: Feature Commentary with Jack Black & Kyle Gass, Feature Commentary with Director Liam Lynch, The Making of Tenacious D, In The Studio feature, Making of the Music Video, Music Video, Theatrical & teaser Trailer, Jump to a song (song sequence from the movie – 12 scenes), Deleted/Extended Scenes, Brains into shit – Alternate Takes Verbatim: In a word: Rock on! |
