They say you should never judge a book by its cover, sometimes I have to remind myself to apply this saying to movies … especially those that are titled: Phat Girlz.

Let's face it, when you read that title and see the cover (look left), it's hard not to be cynical. But, to my great surprise, after watching this movie I felt refreshed, confident and believe it or not, beautiful.

Now, admittedly, it could just have been the mood. Afterall, I'd had a bad day at work, eaten a crappy omelette-for-one for dinner and climbed into my cold and lonely bed at 8 o'clock at night. But as the credits rolled, I jumped out of bed, put on some music and danced around.

Could my euphoric mood really have been from watching a movie about a couple of 'Phat' African American chicks who score a couple of hot guys and see all their dreams come true?

I'm not saying this is the best movie I have even seen, but it was reminiscent of one of my cult favourites Rommie and Michelle's High School Reunion. It's one of those silly movies that makes you laugh and gives you a nice feeling in your tummy. I guess that could have been the omelette, but I'm thinking the best and assuming it was the movie.

The story follows a 'full figured' girl who has a passion for fashion, and designs stylish clothes for larger women. For various reasons, she cant get a break, so has to settle for working in a department store.

She then meets a handsome African doctor who has a passion for curves, but she has trouble trusting his affection as it's not until she loves herself that she can let someone else love her.

I found myself not wanting this movie to finish. By the end I felt close to the characters and wanted to keep watching to see what adventures in love and life they might have.

Phat Girlz
is a feel good flick, but as I said before, it could have just been the mood I was in when started watching it. Whatever the reason, by the end I was feeling 'phat' (in a good way of course).
