The Dudewife-o-meter 1

Fearless

By: The Dude

Director: Ronnie Yu
Cast: Jet Li, Betty Sun, Dong Yong
Rating: 2 out of 5

“What the hell was that all about?” That’s what the subtitle would have said under the startled look on The Dude’s face when the Chinese credits of Fearless started rolling.

Now, despite the fact The Dude normally loves a good action flick in which a bloke gets his chest caved in by a single punch, I have to admit I nodded off midway through this one, which had me scratchin’ me head. If you’re anything like The Dude – and you know you wish you were – then you love a good kung fu epic. But there were just a few problems with this one.

The first predicament is, you barely get to see any of the good stuff of Jet Li tearin’ out some guys vocal chords on account you’re to busy trying to read the subtitles.

The second quandary is that plot line has Mr Li battling his demons and learning the same thing that Mr Miyagi passed on to Daniel-son in the ‘80s; “your best martial art inside”. That means Mr Li’s tearing out vocal chords and the like in the name of peace, which just doesn’t seem to make sense.

That aside, as Fearless is Jet Li’s swan song to martial arts flicks, you should have it in your collection. Faire thee well, gentle karate master. Respect.

Extras: I didn’t even look at them as my mind was too numb after reading the movie. There was no way I was gonna watch the extras.

Verbatim:
Lao Tzu: "Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself makes you fearless."
