Evan AlmightyDIRECTOR: Tom Shadyac Bruce Almighty was one of those films that you knew was going to be funny. Jim Carrey was at the height of his powers, Jennifer Aniston was hot as, Morgan Freeman was well cast, and the story was pretty original. And let’s be honest, they milked just about every gag possible out of that one. The Dude remembers vividly laughing very hard at certain scenes – not milk coming out of my nose laughing, but laughter nonetheless. All of which was always going to make Evan Almighty a tough act to follow. Right from the outset, Steve Carell was going to be compared to Carrey. Now, I like Carell. I do. Ripping bloke. He was great in The 40-year-old Virgin. But he’s no Jim Carrey. That said, he does look quite amusing in a white beard and robes. In a nutshell, Carell plays Evan Baxter, who gets visited by Yahweh upstairs, who, in a twist designed primarily to tweak your funny bones, asks him to build an ark Noah-style. Needless to say this throws a spanner into his life, especially seeings as he was recently elected as a US senator. At the risk of revealing the funny parts, it does not go down to well in Congress when Steve Carell arrives with a beard ZZ Top would be proud of. The whole affair is wrapped up in a neat little environment message, and a humanity message that even prodded at the Dude’s heart a little. I was most impressed actually with the little scene when The Almighty (Freeman) chats to Mrs Senator Baxter (Graham) and explains that if you ask for courage, He don’t zap you with courage as much as give you an opportunity to be courageous. Hmmm… gets a man thinking it does. The Alpha and Omega also explains that ARK actually stands for Act of Random Kindness. That there is some deep stuff. Perhaps an ark is needed to stay afloat amidst the bottomless nature of the movie’s message. What with still waters running deep and all. IN A WORD: Okay Verbatim: |
