Emoh Ruo
By: Lovey
Director: Denny Lawrence Cast: Joy Smithers, Martin Sacks, Philip Quast, Genevieve Mooy, Louise Le Nay, Max Phipps, Jack Ellis, Bill Young Rating: 3 out of 5 As a rule of thumb and to keep my mind clear of all preconceptions I like to know little as possible about a movie before I review it. That said, with the amount of media we are faced with each day its often very hard to know nothing about a movie these days.
But when I read the title of Emoh Ruo, I gotta admit, I was stumped. I’d never heard of it, couldn’t think who was in it, and had no idea what it was about. I was surprised and embarrassed, as I pride myself on my renowned movie knowledge. So, I was feeling a bit on the back foot when I began watching the DVD, but I was immediately impressed. It’s set in the ‘80's and the sets, costumes and even the way they've shot this movie is spot on. Think Dons Party, with a touch of Edward Sissorhands pictography. Emoh Ruo - which is Our Home spelt backwards - follows a young couple who have a little boy and live in a caravan park by the sea. They are clearly struggling and obviously out growing the van, so when a buy-now-pay-later offer for a brand new home comes to light, the couple pounce.
Cue the property sales man, loan officer and new neighbours.
In a reflection of our current interest rate hikes, once the family is moved in to their new home and the bills start to pile up, the dream begin to come unstuck. What follows is a series of unfortunate events, that are strangely believable though quiet ridiculous, played out by a very lovable bunch of characters.
This really is a good little movie that gave me a couple of giggles and a few laugh out loud moments. Which leaves me curious as to how I had not heard of this film. So, in the interest of informing you loyal DVDetails readers, I jumped on the net and did a little research, and low and behold, Emoh Ruo is not a new release, it was actually first released back in 1985!
Some of you may now being say "is this chick for real... its a classic 80's Aussie film", but in all honesty, I had never come across this film - even in all my years working in video stores. Luckily, the fine folk at Roadshow have decided to re-release this movie on DVD. And about time too I say! I think it deserves to take its place in the cult section of great Aussies movies at your local DVD store. In a Word: quirky Verbatim: Les Tunkley: "What do you do to close the back door?... open the fridge?"
