Deliver Us From EvilDirector: Amy Berg I've never found it easy to review a documentary. You can't judge the actors because there are none, and you can't critique the plot because it's based on fact. But, I was asked to review Deliver Us From Evil, and I had to step up. Credit where it’s due, this is a gutsy look into the corruption of the Catholic Church and one of the many priests charged with pedophilia that the church has allegedly protected. Director Amy Berg delivers this doco in a simple, yet compelling way, that I have to admit left me feeling unsettled. The story is told by pedophile Father Oliver O'Grady and three of his victims and their families. The abuses occurred in California in the 1970's, and while O'Grady is now an old man, his now middle-aged victims still live with the scars left by the Father they once trusted. I was troubled by the blasé recollection given by O'Grady. It’s pretty harrowing to watch as he explains in chilling detail how he molested the children entrusted to him by their families, and the church in turn failed to acknowledge the assaults. The evidence that the Catholic Church did everything they could to deny the allegations and failure to protect more children from being harmed is also very unsettling. Berg does not miss the church at all, portraying them as a money hungry corporation. On a personal note, it sickens me to think many children have suffered because the richest church in the world craved more wealth. Deliver Us From Evil will open your eyes and mind and comes highly recommended. In a word: Disturbing |
